A helpful guide to referencing

As you should all be aware by now, when completing a project of any kind that requires borrowing information from another source, it is of upmost importance that you accurately record the details of the source. When referencing information, make sure that you add enough detail so that someone else could go back to the source and find the material again.

Here are some tips to referencing different sources.

1. Books - (author(s), title underlined, the publisher and date of publication.

2. Newspaper or Magazine - Treated the same as a book. Author first (if no author, refer to the newspaper / magazine as the publisher), and page number.

3. Film, TV, Radio - Title, release date or date of broadcast, (Director, date), publisher (especially for a music recording), place of recording, running time.

4. Internet site - Name of site, URL / address, date the site/s were accessed.

5. Interview - Name of interviewee, where it took place, and the date.

6. Survey - Title of survey, numbrs surveyed, and key characteristics, place and date of survey.

You will also be given handouts in class that reiterate this information as well as giving some full examples.
